The spring season is upon us after a harsh winter with restricted access to indoor fun like dining and other gatherings. Some would say the best part of spring is the sun and the fun, but here at Top Lawn, we think it’s the trees. Trees and shrubs bring life to humans and they bring beauty to the world around us. Oftentimes, Michigan is noted for just the sheer amount of trees that we have here. Actually, in 2019, the Daily Press reported our state is made up of 53% forest and has about 14 billion trees.
Summary Points
ToggleNaturally, with literally billions of trees in our area, it’s important to take care of the ones right in our front yards. Without proper tree care, our beloved greenery can become infested with all sorts of nasty stuff like diseases and insects. Some insects and pests are completely harmless to trees, but there are a number of them near Commerce, MI that can be pretty harmful to trees.
The Infamous Emerald Ash Borer
You can probably guess which tree this insect can be found in – Ash trees. Unfortunately for your trees, this pest acts fast and can take down the health of a tree at alarming rates. The symptoms of the Emerald Ash Borer include the thing of your filled-out trees and the splitting of bark. People with Ash trees in their yards or on their business properties will first start to notice that their trees are shedding too early. After that first sign, there may be “D” shaped holes that begin to show up in the bark of their trees.
All of this sounds pretty scary when you aren’t sure if you are properly taking care of your trees in the first place. But just like with human medicine, the best kind is prevention. Ensuring that your trees, and the turf around it, have proper care year-round, but especially during the growing season, is the best way to create a safer environment.
The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug
This bug is a tough one and it can be found all over most of the United States, including right here in Michigan. This is often found in ornamental trees, which are common household trees in the area of Commerce, Michigan. They are black and white along the edges and are not even an inch long. They attack in the early spring, which begins in April, and tend to slow down their attacks around August. The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug will ruin your trees by feeding on them from the inside out.
